that the furniture lasts for years. My journey into upholstery did not begin in a workshop. It began as
a student trying to survive at university while trusting God and working hard to build a better future.
Through challenges, failures, and persistence, I eventually learned the craft that I now practice

Small Beginnings at University
In 2016, I started my studies at Howard College in Durban. I lived at home in KwaMashu and
traveled to campus every day. Although I received student funding, life was still difficult. Transport
costs, daily expenses, and helping at home made it challenging to focus only on studies. Instead of
giving up, I decided to start a small hustle. Towards the end of that year, a friend and I began selling
chips to students on campus. It was a simple business, but it helped us survive. Unfortunately,
campus security eventually stopped us and confiscated our goods. Although that moment felt
discouraging, it taught me something important: when you are determined to succeed, you must
keep finding ways forward.
The Opportunity That Introduced Me to Upholstery
In 2018, someone noticed my consistency and determination. A fellow student approached me and
said that he and a friend were starting an upholstery business but needed someone reliable to help
them build it. We found a small workspace in the Wiggins area near Chesterville and Bonella in
Durban. I helped contribute to the starting capital, paying rent and helping purchase materials for
the first couch samples. Slowly, customers began coming in.
The workshop started making
couches and furniture pieces, and the business started growing. But running a business also
requires discipline and integrity. Unfortunately, not everyone involved in the workshop took the craft
as seriously as they should have. Some couches looked beautiful on the outside but were not
properly built on the inside. This led to unhappy customers and complaints. Eventually I decided to
leave the workshop and try to continue the journey on my own
When I first tried to make a couch by myself, the result was not good. The structure was weak and
the finishing was not what a professional upholsterer should produce. At that moment I realized
something important: upholstery is not something you master overnight. It requires patience,
practice, and humility to learn properly. Later that year I met my former colleague again at a fabric
supply store. I returned to work with him temporarily, but this time my goal was different. I wanted to
learn everything about the craft so that one day I could confidently build furniture on my own.
Developing Real Upholstery Skills
By 2019 I began practicing upholstery independently. When the COVID lockdowns came in 2020, I
used that time to improve my skills even further. I committed myself to building at least one couch
every month so that I could practice and refine my technique. That period helped me understand
the details that make a couch strong and long lasting: the internal wooden frame, proper support,
correct foam density, careful stitching, and precise finishing. These are the things customers rarely
see but they are exactly what separates a skilled upholsterer from someone who only focuses on
appearances.
In 2021, I was given an opportunity to teach carpentry and upholstery at a community organization
in Amanzimtoti. Teaching others helped deepen my own understanding of the craft. Later I worked
with a construction team involved in renovation projects, including restoring an old building in Cape
Town. Through that experience I learned additional skills such as drywall installation, painting,
finishing work, and team leadership. Every step added another layer to my knowledge and
experience.
Continuing the Craft in Durban
After returning to Durban, I began working with a furniture restoration specialist in the Morningside
area. This environment allowed me to continue practicing upholstery while also working on
restoration and furniture finishing projects. Today I can fully manufacture couches, repair worn
furniture, and build wooden tables.
I am also working toward building an independent upholstery
and carpentry business while growing my online presence.

in God, it is always possible to build something meaningful from small beginnings.
