From the Workshop – Stories from a Durban Upholsterer

Should you Reupholster Or Replace Your Couch?

You walk into your living room after a long day. The couch is the same one you’ve had for years.
Maybe the cushions have started to sink, the fabric looks worn, or the color no longer matches th
style of your home. Many homeowners in Morningside, Windermere, and across Durban face this
same question: should you throw the couch away and buy a new one, or should you restore it?

The truth is, many pieces of furniture that people think are finished can actually be brought back to
life. With the right craftsmanship, the right fabric, and attention to comfort, an old couch can feel and
look even better than when it was new.
At Morningside LUXE Upholstery, we often meet customers who are surprised at how much value
is still hidden inside their furniture.

Upholstery is not just about replacing fabric. It is about restoring
comfort, strengthening structure, and giving furniture a second life.
Before deciding whether to replace or reupholster your furniture, consider the quality of the frame.
Many older couches have strong wooden frames that are actually more durable than modern
mass produced furniture. If the frame is still solid, restoring the couch is often the smarter option.

Comfort is another important factor. Over time foam and cushioning lose their shape. Reupholstery
allows an upholsterer to replace the foam, adjust support, and improve the overall comfort of the
couch. Sometimes customers tell me their couch feels better after restoration than it did when it was
new.

One of the best parts of upholstery is the ability to completely transform the look of furniture. By
choosing new fabric, patterns, or colors, you can match your couch to your home’s style while
keeping the furniture you already love.

My journey into upholstery actually started in a very unexpected way. Back in 2015 I was studying
at UKZN Howard College. Like many students, I was trying to support myself financially. I travelled
between campus and my home in KwaMashu, and the costs were difficult to manage.
Around that time a friend of mine started selling chips on campus, and I joined him.

At first it was a
small hustle, but I kept going. By 2017 and 2018 many students knew me because I was always
there selling consistently. That experience taught me business, discipline, and how to serve people.
In 2018 someone approached me with an idea. He wanted to start a business with a friend who
knew upholstery, but they needed someone business minded to help make it work.

That meeting
introduced me to a craftsman named John from Celestine Furnitures.
John had the upholstery skill but needed help with things like finding a workspace, buying materials,
marketing, and getting customers. I helped us find a place to work and contributed toward the first
materials. I also helped bring in our first customers.

Watching furniture transform in front of my eyes fascinated me. I started practicing the craft myself
and slowly learned the details of upholstery. Over time I developed my own style focusing on
comfort, color, and precision.
Today I have been working in upholstery for about eight years and run my own business called
Morningside LUXE Upholstery here in Durban.

I specialize in comfortable seating and especially
enjoy working on L-shaped couches.
One of the projects I am most proud of was a blue L-shaped couch I built in 2021. The design
came together perfectly and the comfort was incredible. Seeing that piece completed reminded me
why I love this craft.

In addition to upholstery, I also do carpentry work. Carpentry and upholstery go hand in hand
because strong frames and proper structure are essential for longnlasting furniture.
Over the years I have worked with customers across Morningside, Windermere, Berea, Glenwood,
and even Umhlanga. We have restored couches in homes, repaired office chairs for businesses,
and refreshed seating for restaurants.

If you are thinking about restoring your furniture, here are a few tips. First, check the structure of the
couch. If the frame is solid and the shape still fits your space, upholstery is often the best option.
Second, choose fabric carefully. Durban’s climate can be warm and humid, so durable fabrics that
breathe well tend to last longer.
Finally, work with someone who focuses on both quality and comfort. A good upholsterer does
more than replace fabric.

They rebuild the comfort and extend the life of your furniture.
Furniture carries memories. It might be the couch where your family watches movies together or
where friends gather when they visit. Instead of throwing those memories away, sometimes all a
piece needs is skilled hands and a fresh design.

That is the heart behind the work we do at Morningside LUXE Upholstery — giving furniture a
second life while bringing comfort and style back into homes across Durban.
